The Easy Guide to Pass the National Physical Therapy Exam


It doesn't matter if you have completed a master or doctor of physical therapy, you must pass the NPTE to become a fully qualified and licensed practitioner. The NPTE is given by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) and is designed to determine if you have the minimum required knowledge to safely practice physical therapy. If you don't pass the NPTE you can't practice, so here is what you need to do to make it easy.

STEP 1: Familiarize Yourself: The NPTE is a 5 hour computer based exam that consists of 5 sections, each containing 50 multiple choice questions. You are marked on how many questions you answer correctly and do not get penalized if you answer incorrectly. To pass you will need to score more than 600 out of a possible 800. STEP 2: Register: Contact the licensing authority in the state or jurisdiction in which you want to practise then go to the FSBPT website to register. There are deadlines for application and set dates to take the exam, so be sure to check the dates.

STEP 3: Study: There are plenty of study guides available with tips on how to pass the NPTE. The most trusted and comprehensive guide is The 2012 National Physical Therapy Examination: Review & Study Guide, by S. O'Sullivan and R. Siegelman. For $85 you get 3 simulated exams on CD as well as study strategies and state licensure information. The Chair Massage Business


The chair massage business can be an exciting and well-paying way to gain extra income. However, in order for it to work as one's full time job requires a lot of work. For years, massage therapists have used chair massage as a way to generate money, market themselves, and help to fill their appointment books with longer sessions.

Here's what you'll need:

A massage license (for nearly all states)

If you're not a massage therapist, becoming a therapist is going to be your first and most important challenge. In most states, you have to obtain licensure from the state or city/county in which you are living. In order to get licensed as a massage therapist, you will need to get some training. Many massage schools provide programs that go over the number of hours required by the state, but you may find several schools that offer only the precise number of hours that are called for. You may very well find courses as short as 7 months long. Various colleges are now offering massage programs as well. Ensure that the school is accredited and has decent reviews.

In addition to the massage certifications, etc., you will need an occupational license. This permits you to accept money for services rendered. You will find many therapists who work "under the table," but you are legally responsible for claiming your earnings. Of course, if you're going to have a chair massage business, you will need a chair! A massage chair can run anywhere from $100 up to $600 or more. If you're just starting out, I would not recommend buying the expensive chairs just yet. And when browsing for a chair, try to find one that is easily moveable (wheels are a plus).

Cleaning supplies will include things like paper towels and some spray cleaner. I have used a variety of cleaning solutions in the past, and I've found that a 50/50 mix of alcohol and water works well. You will also need hand sanitizer.

Most chair massages are around 10 to 15 minutes long. But, the time might vary depending on the client, the event, etc. So it is important to keep a clock or timer within eyesight. You don't want to keep the next client waiting too long. Many therapists also invest in face-cradle covers for their chairs. They are comfortable, but I found the select-a-size paper towels to be more cost effective and most clients don't really care.

Always remember that this is your chair massage business, so you can run it however you choose. However, you will probably want business cards to hand out, an appointment book nearby to schedule longer massages, and possibly a receipt book for those who want receipts. You may also want to bring music for your clients to listen to, maybe some candles, aromatherapy, and anything else that will give them the best experience you can give them.

Market yourself wherever you think people would be benefited by chair massage. Many corporations would love to have a chair massage during lunch breaks. Golf courses, radio stations, sporting events, art festivals, malls, grocery stores, and airports are all great locations for a chair massage business. However, all of these venues will require you to go through some red tape before you can set up.

After all is said and done, you should have fun and enjoy meeting all the different men and women you will encounter with this type of business. If your heart is in it, it will show through your hands, and people will come back again and again.

Whose Problem Do You Solve? Niche Marketing for Massage Therapists


Massage therapists often have an inherent resistance to "selling" themselves. If you find yourself reading this article: Congratulations! And just so you know, you are not selling out. You are providing a communications platform so that those who need your services can actually find you. That is a service in itself.

There is a logical principle that if you solve a client's problem better than your competition, under the same conditions (price, availability etc.) and communicate this to your potential clients, success (however you define this for yourself) is unavoidable. This simple statement opens up a whole drawer of possibilities of refining your communications practice to attract more of what you want.

Define problem?

What many do not realize is that it is not the product or service that the client desires, but rather the feeling, emotion and sensation that ensues when their problem is solved or improved. This should be the result of using the product or experiencing the service. A client's problem is not finding a massage therapist. The client's problem is that they are not feeling the way they would like to. And you might have the solution to that problem.

Here are some examples so you get the gist:

Starbucks does not sell coffee, they sell a community meeting place.

Mercedes does not sell cars, they offer status symbols.

Gatorade quenches thirst.

What is your solution?

Anticipating client problems, associating them with a demographic profile and offering a solution is essential to being able to address them successfully and critical to attracting that client group.

Every demographic has there own common set of problems. Yes, everyone is different, but based on commonalities such as age, profession, location and other keys we find that certain groups have similar needs. We often can define groups based on age, income, mobility, education, employment status, and even location.

Some examples of the more obvious groups are:

Pregnant women

Some examples of the less obvious are:

People with fibromyalgia

Children with Down syndrome

What does this mean for your practice?

When you define your product or service, think about what you really provide. You may not always be able to directly call it by its name, but you should try to get as close to describing it as possible.

And then think about whom you can really relate too. Often this is based on your own life experiences during which you developed a deep understanding of a situation and are relaxed about it. It's important that you can relate without judgment to others experiencing the same situation and dealing with these people will not pose a difficult situation for you. The area where you can develop a deep rapport, is where you will likely be most successful.

The more accurately you can define your solution to an existing problem, the easier it is to communicate with your target market. Does that make sense? If you know that you are catering to senior citizens, it is easier to find out where the congregate, which publications they read and what other forms of communication they tend to prefer. It is also much easier to formulate the solution(s) you offer.

The question is always: How can I improve the client's experience in their current state by guiding them to a future state in which they have a better experience of themselves.

The next question is: How can I convey this information to them?

While there are many details that can be refined in this process it is important to return to the original thought of: "What problem am I solving here". I find that there are primary issues and secondary issues and sometimes even a third or fourth layer that offer opportunities to provide a unique service.

Let me provide an example.
Most likely the primary reason your client is showing up (for the first time) is that they have a PAIN in their... Probably one of the main reasons is that they have not spent the time to RELAX and by booking a massage they are giving themselves permission to do so. Maybe underneath all that is that they find themselves in a situation that will not allow them to take TIME AWAY from the circumstances and by visiting you they are doing so.

While the primary issue is often addressed by many: example: "relieve your pain with massage therapy", secondary and tertiary layers often go unmentioned.

For example: "Get immediate relief from your migraine headache, relax deeply and give yourself the time out you deserve".

Now, if your communication says (and this is a real example):

"[Name Removed] Massage Therapy is one of the more experienced massage practices in Los Angeles (located in North End, LA). I draw from 23 years of experience in healing work and massage therapy and a strong, intuitive, compassionate, and uniquely healing touch. I am versed in Swedish, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, On-site Chair Massage, and Energy Healing."

This statement not only requires the client to figure out on their own what the benefits are, but also leaves everything open to interpretation.

Would it not be better to say the following?:
"If you are looking for someone who will really listen to you and knows how sensitive you are, can alleviate the little aches and pains with comforting touch and send you off feeling like a new person, your should call ... for a free consultation."

Physical Therapy Assistant School


Attending a physical therapy assistant school may be a good option if you are interested in physical therapy but not quite sure that you want to commit to becoming a full time therapist.

In order to become a physical therapy assistant you would need to obtain an associate's degree from an accredited program. There are over 240 programs in the country that offer this degree. This usually takes two years, though depending on the school and the program it could be slightly longer or shorter. Most courses and colleges also have field experience and clinical work involved in the program, so it would provide some real work experience as well as taking classes.

Just like in any program, where you decide to go to college with affect how much it costs. The two year program can range from $7,000 to $15,000 depending on where you attend college, the prestige and reputation of the school, and where you live. However, keep in mind that there will be additional fees for the clinical section of the course, and for textbooks, etc.

If you're looking to become an actual physical therapist some day, a PTA school might not be worth it. To become a physical therapist you would need to complete college and receive a master's degree in physical therapy, so if that is your goal it might be best to just pursue that plan of action right away. Going through an assistant program will allow you to do more and make more money than just being a PT aide - sometimes almost twice as much money. If you want to be involved in the business but you don't want to go to graduate school or you don't have a bachelor's, assistant school is probably a smart move.

The Ling Legacy - Swedish Massage Techniques


Swedish massage has been with us since the 18th century. Dr. Per Henrik Ling is regarded as the father of Swedish massage. The techniques he pioneered are still at the root of the practice today and serve as a wonderful way to relax while increasing oxygen flow within the bloodstream and releasing toxins from one's muscles.

This form of massage has survived for centuries because it works and because it's a very physically enjoyable experience for the recipient. If you've ever luxuriated in the pleasure of a Swedish massage and then basked in the afterglow of its consequences, you'll understand why Ling's legacy continues to be so extremely popular.

Swedish massage works (and feels so good) because it's much more than a simple rubdown. Practitioners utilize a number of specific techniques to produce an incomparable massage experience. Let's look at the six techniques that make up this long-lived massage sequence.

Effleurage. The massage begins with a serious of light strokes delivered via the fingertips, thumbs and palms of the masseuse. From the recipient's perspective, this serves as an introduction to the process, a warm-up that induces relaxation.

Petrissage. At this point, the massage increases in vigor. The gliding movements that marked the effleurage stage are replaced by a more intense kneading of the area being massaged.

Vibration. During this stage of Swedish massage, the masseuse applies movements that quickly vibrate the body.

Percussion. At this point, the stroking and rubbing usually associated with massage are replaced by tapping and chopping movements. When people think of the practice, they often conjure up mental images of a masseuse delivering a rapid series of "karate chop"-like hacks to the recipient's back. That the percussive portion of the massage.

Movement. The massage concludes with stretching and bending, facilitated by the practitioner.

Every true Swedish massage moves through this same six-step process. The combination of activities produces a unique overall experience that produces some wonderful results.

When one considers the information with which Dr. Ling had to work during the 1700s, the fact that he created a foundation for a form of massage that generates such positive results is nothing short of amazing. Whether he was a true genius visionary or just happened to accidentally stumble upon an approach that works, there's no doubt that he created something special.

Today we understand the body better than ever before. We've mapped our genetic codes, have equipment available to show us exactly what's happening within us, utilize amazing tests that can show even the slightest irregularities and continue to enjoy the benefits of new technologies designed to keep up healthier and to improve the quality of our lives. Still, there's room for a simple six-step massage that's continued through the centuries. There are many different settings where physical therapist practice their craft. These settings may include schools, hospitals, private outpatient clinics, nursing homes, and in private homes. Secondly, are you capable of concentrating without distractions in your home.

In my experience, patients love the convenience of in home therapy because it is one less trip they need to take. Typically, patients can have therapy sessions very early in the morning before going to work, or late in the evening following work. The whole concept is to promote convenience and patient compliance.

Insurance coverage is dependent on the therapist. Some therapists participate in network with medicare and other comercial plans while others are out of network. It is important to communicate with the therapist prior to the first visit to find out how your treatment sessions will be covered.

In-home physical therapy is not right for everyone. If you enjoy staying close to home, have a tight time schedule to keep, and enjoy exercising out of your home, then you should consider in home physical therapy.

Starting Salary For Massage Therapy


As holistic and complementary medicine is becoming more and more popular, there is a need for more therapists to undertake the necessary training and start working in the market to cover the demand. Patients who have tried the holistic approach are now finding that they are easing their aches and pains without having to resort to medication and long term pain killers. Because of this expansion in the market, the starting salaries for massage therapy practitioners is ever increasing.

If you are a fully qualified therapist who is just starting out as a professional, there are several different routes to take, each of which will vary your earning power considerably. The starting salaries for massage therapy carried out for an employer, such as a spa or health club, may be from as little as $9 per hour up to around $18 per hour. It really does depend on your employer. Some employers pay on a commission basis, which can really add up if you become popular. If, however, you opt for a mobile practice, you will get to keep a good deal more of your income.
