500CE-1500 BCE

1600-1900 CE

Massage therapy was largely unpracticed as more advanced medical pharmaceuticals and technologies were developed. It wasn't until Pehr Henrik Ling developed the techniques to treat himself for rheumatism that Swedish massage was developed -- which was known then as Swedish medical gymnastics. In 1813, he and a co-worker received government support to begin the Royal Gymnastic Central Institute in Stockholm. The goal of this institution was to help others use exercise and massage therapy to treat health conditions.

1900 CE to the present

Massage was used to treat and rehabilitate injured soldiers who fought in World War I and World War II. The physiotherapy clinics in the U.S. treated roughly 75,000 men who were disabled while fighting in World War I. During World War II, soldiers suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder were treated by massage therapy.

Pregnancy Massage and an Appropriate Treatment


Before any massage can be administered it may be advisable for pregnant clients to obtain a doctors clearance for any therapy received. If the client is still in the first trimester it would be important to obtain medical clearance before commencing any treatment so her doctor is aware of the treatment she will be receiving.

Some common symptoms of pregnancy which can be treated with massage are sacroiliac pain, sciatica and fluid retention. Treatment will only be able to address these problems assuming the doctor has given the all clear to proceed and no other contraindications present themselves.

The symptoms of sacroiliac pain are often caused by traumatic injuries, biomechanical injuries, hormonal changes and inflammatory joint disease. Provided the cause of pain isn't the result of a traumatic injury or inflammatory disease then the symptoms can be treated with massage.

Before massage is applied a heat pack can be applied to the sacral area to increase circulation, relax muscle tissue and alleviate some of the sacroiliac pain. Massage to the abdominal region is strictly contraindicated in the first trimester and so this area will be avoided.

Massaging the upper back, sacrum and lumber region can help alleviate sacroiliac pains, pains in the lumbar region, assist with circulation and help to relax the client. Treatment for sciatica is still required and will follow upper body treatment. Fluid retention will be alleviated during all massage so it is not entirely necessary to target that problem specifically unless it presents itself in a key area. If the fluid retention is too severe then massage is contraindicated and it is best the client speaks to her doctor about it before continuing with treatment. If severe fluid retention is isolated to one location then contraindication is specified to that area alone or as recommended by her doctor.

Treatment for sciatica involves manipulating trigger points in the quadratus lumborum, gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus. Massage to the rest of the legs can also correct any muscle imbalances that may be present which can affect the alignment of the pelvis and lumbar region. In addition to the musculo-skeletal benefits provided by leg massage; circulation will be improved in the legs and throughout the rest of the body.

While the client is receiving treatment Aromatherapy can be utilised to help her relax by using essential oils in an evaporative burner and with her permission, through a massage oil.

In the evaporative burner the ideal blend would be a combination of lavender and lemon essential oils to help with relaxation and relieve any nausea. These oils can also be used in the massage carrier oil at low concentration of around 1%. Lavender and lemon essential oils used in a carrier oil can help with fluid retention by improving circulation, can help relieve muscular aches and pains and help to create a relaxing environment.

To support the massage treatment, the client can be instructed in ways to help her while at home, at work or simply while she is out and about. This would constitute proper posture while sitting, laying and performing day to day duties. Sleeping with a pillow between her knees can also help to reduce symptoms of pain in the pelvic and lumbar regions while laying on her side.

Home massage is possible from with the help of the partner, family member or close friend. Simple effleurage and petrissage motions can be demonstrated to the individual whom will be performing the treatment to help alleviate pain and discomfort which the pregnant client might be experiencing; in the case of two partners exchanging massage, this will also create a stronger bond between the two adults and their baby.

Massage and Contraindications

Some of these major contraindications would be:

An Abnormal body temperature: if the presenting client has a fever greater than 37.5 deg C, the massage should not be given. Mostly, fevers mean that a person body is trying to locate and dispose of an invading organism. The human body will activate its defensive measures so it can isolate and take of the ailment. A massage may halt or hinder this process.

Infectious and acute disease: Clientele that have contracted any infectious diseases like typhoid, influenza, or any other sort of severe cold should not be administered massage treatment. A client who receives a massage while they have an acute viral infection may have their illness intensified, whilst there is also a risk that the therapist may contract the virus.

Inflammation: This type of situation is very common. If an individual has some acute inflammation, a massage will only add to the irritation and further the spread of the inflammation. High Blood Pressure: If you happen to have a client who has or has had high blood pressure, then that person's physician should be consulted before undergoing massage therapy. Massage therapy can actually help reduce some of the hypertension that usually accompanies high blood pressure. You will usually not have to worry about massaging a person with a low blood pressure but you will want to be careful since this can cause some clients to feel dizzy after the therapy because of a drop in their blood pressure

Other contraindications: There are a plethora of different contraindications for getting a massage. The guidelines for this are straightforward enough- you do not want your therapist administering the massage to worsen any medical condition you may have, and you do not want to give anything contagious to your massage therapist. Please consult your doctor before receiving massage therapy if you are at all unsure on this issue.

Other conditions can include:

1. Fracture, burns, or bleeding

2. Blood Clots

3. Opened sores or lesions

4. Systemic infections

5. Cancer

There have been cases with women during their period that have received massage therapy within the first few days of their menstruation noticing the flow of blood a lot heavier than normal.

There is some debate on the issue of massage therapy being contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy. Usually, if there are not any underlying medical problems and the pregnancy is moving, as it should without history of miscarriage, then receiving massage therapy from a professional is ok. The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon - Book Review


The Burn Journals is a true story. Brent Runyon was fourteen years old when he set himself on fire. It was a deliberate attempt at suicide. And not his first attempt either.

People often wonder what could be so bad for a teenager to want to end their life. What problems could they possibly have? We tend to forget the power of raging hormones and emotions that are so intense they can't be tamed. Teenagers don't have it as easy as some like to believe. They suffer from stress, anxiety and depression just like adults do. As this book demonstrates.

The Burn Journals is the story of Brent Runyon's journey to recovery after being burned. Brent suffered second and third degree burns of partial and full thickness to over eighty-five percent of his body. He was taken to the Children's Hospital where he spent four months being looked after by doctors, nurses, physical therapists, psychologists and occupational therapists.

Nurses cleaned his wounds daily which was very painful. The physical and occupational therapists assisted him to move again as his skin grafts were limiting his range of movement. Psychologists merely angered him. He didn't believe he had a problem, so they couldn't help him, and were a waste of his time. Doctors made him better by performing skin graft operations even if they caused him more pain. And his friends were very supportive and sent cards, letters and made him tapes to lift his spirits.

When the four months were up Brent moved to duPont, a rehabilitation hospital, for 3 months. There he continued his physical therapy and saw three different psychologists during his short stay. He liked none of them. He believed they ask the wrong questions so wouldn't be able to help him.

Next Brent went home for a little while. He attended physical therapy at a local elementary school and went back to the Children's Hospital for some of this therapy also. A tutor came to his home to help him catch up on his school work. Once again Brent had an aversion to his psychologist.

As Brent's body healed he realised that why he burnt himself had become less of a big deal.

Dominion Hospital Day Treatment Program was Brent's last stop for treatment. There he was treated for his mental problems. He stayed there for about two months. It seemed to have helped Brent as when he left there he went back to school. He was away from school for almost a year so going back was scary for him.

Throughout this book Brent uses humour in the form of sarcasm to cope with his ordeal. The book is very well written. It is easy to feel the moments Brent is anxious and the moments he is feeling awkward. Swear words are liberally sprinkled throughout and Brent goes into some very graphic detail about toileting and masturbation. So if these topics are likely to offend, best not read this book. For everyone else it is very easy to get hooked and want to keep reading.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I give it four out of five stars.

Your ADHD Child and Massage Therapy


Attention, impulse control and hyperactivity problems. The diagnostic label Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). More and more children and adolescents are being diagnosed with ADHD on a daily basis. The condition, if left untreated, could result in various problems including family stress, school disruption, criminality and substance abuse. School-aged children with ADHD have inferior academic performance, social, emotional and adaptive skills.

Various medications and treatments have become available to treat ADHD. Today, I would like to discuss one such treatment. Massage. I feel, at this stage, that something important needs to be said. Massage, as a treatment for ADHD should be considered as a complimentary therapy. In the past, complimentary therapy was referred to as alternative therapy, suggesting that it should take the place of more conventional medicine. This has led to wonderful, miraculous healing stories, but also as many sad and unnecessary situations where conditions have worsened and in severe cases caused death. For serious illnesses and conditions that can be life threatening or could cause serious future problems, always seek the advise of a medical professional and then, with your treating professional's consent, include other therapies to compliment their treatment plan.

With that said, massage can be an extremely valuable tool in helping to alleviate the effects of ADHD and can bring about great relief for parents and children alike.

A study which appeared in the spring 1998 issue of the journal Adolescence (pages 103-108) revealed the following results:

A number of adolescents with ADHD were selected to commence two forms of therapy. One group was sent for relaxation therapy. The other group was sent for a set of massage treatments. The results surprised many as children who received the massage therapy rated themselves as feeling happier than those who had participated in the relaxation therapy. Observers also rated them as being less fidgety and focused following the sessions. Teachers also noticed a significant decrease in hyperactivity for the massage therapy group but not for the relaxation therapy group.

Feedback from parents of children with ADHD in my own practice have reported some other differences in their children, including better confidence, an over-all more relaxed child, improved moods, and better sleeping patterns. I have also treated an ADHD adolescent who had been involved in a car accident. She had been extremely tense and nervous in the car after that. After just one session, the adolescent got into the car with her mother, turned around in her seat and slept peacefully throughout their 60km trip home. Massage, although mainly used as a form of relaxation, holds many benefits. Massage is a mechanical cleanser (increases the interchange of tissues fluids emptied into the capillaries and lymphatic system), it improves circulation, brings about a general state of relaxation, adds to overall well-being, relieves muscle spasms, improves muscle tone, produces an alpha state in which the body and mind are totally relaxed, promotes good digestion, relieves head, neck and backache, is a great help in releasing negative and pent-up emotions, and improves self-esteem. These are just some of the benefits, but when one looks at this list, it is not surprising that massage can work wonders in the case of ADHD.

In conclusion, just one or two short massage sessions per week can be extremely beneficial for your child or adolescent who has been diagnosed with ADHD. Obviously, a 1 hour full body massage will probably be a bit much for your child or adolescent to handle due to the fact that they have trouble staying still for prolonged periods of time, but short 20 - 30 minute sessions will be a wonderful start and should start showing results within the first few sessions. Furthermore, supplementing professional treatments with short home massages will help tremendously. This will also strengthen your bond with your child. Speak to your massage therapist about private training in a few simple techniques which you can use at home between professional.

Finally, always remember to be good to yourself and spoil yourself with a massage session every now and again too.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include pain, tingling, burning and numbness of the hand. Sixteen people diagnosed with this syndrome participated in the study. All of them held jobs involving heavy word processing or computer work.

Subjects were randomly assigned to either the standard-treatment control group or the massage-therapy group. Those in the massage group received one massage per week on the affected arm for four weeks. They were also instructed in self-massage, which they were to perform each night before bed.

The massage routine consisted of stroking of moderate pressure from the fingertips to the elbow. A massage and pain log was kept by subjects in the massage group. In the log, participants recorded the times at which they began and ended self-massage, as well as their levels of pain on a scale from zero to 10.

Subjects in the control group received no intervention, but were taught the massage routine after the study ended.

Physicians evaluated participants' carpal tunnel symptoms, such as tingling, numbness, pain and strength, at the beginning and end of the four-week study. The Tinel sign, which tests to see if light tapping of the affected area elicits pain or tingling, was also used at the start and finish of the study. Physicians used the Phalen Test at the beginning and end of the study as well. The Phalen Test involves flexing of the wrists to see if numbness or tingling occurs.

A nerve conduction test was also performed at the start and finish of the study. This involved stimulation of the median sensory nerves through electrodes placed on each subject's index finger and wrist. Peak sensory latencies were recorded to test for nerve compression at the carpal tunnel. Median peak latency was the primary outcome measure.

Assessments were also made before and after the massage sessions on the first and last days of the study, including the Perceived Grip Strength Scale; VITAS, a pain assessment using a visual analogue scale; the state anxiety inventory; and the Profile of Mood States.

Results of the study showed that the subjects in the massage group had significantly less pain and reduced carpal tunnel symptoms, as well as shorter median peak latencies and increased grip strength.

"Functional activity also improved as noted in reduced pain and increased grip strength in the massage therapy group, both immediately after the first and last massage therapy sessions and by the end of the study," state the study's authors. "Finally, the massage therapy group reported lower anxiety and depressed mood levels both immediately after the first and last sessions and by the end of the study."

Can a Cash Practice Work?

We want physical therapists to promote and deliver physical therapy and not become some kind of substitute profession of vitamin salesman or health club operator. We are talking about you keeping your traditional physical therapy practice and opening a separate physical therapy practice that delivers cash only physical therapy services to patients.

It can be done. You can make a profit and still deliver a high quality of care to your patients. This is not a situation where you have to make a choice between paying the bills or providing a patient with the best possible care. For once you can have your cake and eat it too. Balancing muscle groups increases strength and flexibility; for example, the pecs are commonly short and hyper-tonic which protracts the scapulae causing neck and upper back pain.

This could cause a shortening of the left side of the latissimus dorsi, and might even cause the trunk to twist slightly left, with the right pec and anterior deltoid being shortened. This can cause pain that prevents a person from doing this exercise, even though it is good under normal circumstances.

One effective treatment is to have this client lay on his right side, and for the massage therapist to lengthen the left lat and serratus anterior. The therapist also has to release tight muscle bands in the deltoid and the rotator cuff, as well as under the shoulder blade. Then, with the client supine, the massage therapist works to release tight pectorals and the anterior deltoid of the right side. In this example, the SCM and trapezium would also need attention because the entire shoulder girdle and neck area will be affected and in need of relief.

Myofascial Release Aka Foam Rolling


Tight muscles, limited Range of Motion, pain while working out? If you are working out on a regular basis, you will experience one or more of those problems at least once. To prevent or eliminate such problems, you should integrate Self Myofascial Release (SMR) aka Foam Rolling into your training-regimen.

How does SMR work?

SMR relies on the principle of autogenic inhibition. Autogenic Inhibition is a mechanism that prevents the muscles from exerting too much pressure on bones and tendons, to reduce the risk of injuries.

We have so-called Golgi-Tendon-Organs (GTO) in our body. The GTO is a proprioceptive sensory receptor organ and is located among muscle and tendon. If a muscle is contracted or stretched, the GTO senses the muscle tension and sends signals to the brain about the force being exerted to the muscle. If the tension increases so much, that a tendon could rupture, the GTO stimulates muscle spindles to relax the muscle and thus preventing injuries.

A good example for autogenic inhibition is weightlifting or bodybuilding. Most of the weightlifters raise a heavy load until muscle failure. The massive amount of force being exerted by the weights activate the GTO and the GTO then signals the brain to relax the muscle to prevent ruptures and injuries.

How to do it?

GTO also helps in making stretching techniques highly effective, because it is very sensitive to changes in muscle tension. This is where SMR comes into play. SMR on a foam roller is an inexpensive and very effective way to breakdown scar tissue and adhesions and thus increasing flexibility and performance. Ten Minutes on the foam roller every second day is all you need.

You can get a foam roller for 10-15$ at Amazon or some other retailer. Most of them are 6 inch by 24 inch. But a pipe with the same ratio will do, too.

Once you have your foam roller, you can start with the exercises. Place the foam roller on the floor and get to work. Use your whole bodyweight to roll over the foam roller and try to locate tender spots (so-called 'Hot Spots') that feel tight. Once you located a tight spot, you should hold that position until the pain diminishes or the spot feels softer (mostly 20-30 seconds).

There are some basic exercises you can do, but i encourage you to experiment with different positions and exercises as well. If you go to YouTube and type in "Foam Roller Exercise Video" you will get a great video on the best SMR exercises.

Exercises:

Harmstrings: Your Harmstring should be resting on the foam roller. Gently roll up and down the foam roller from the Gluteus to the knees. You can do this with either one or two legs at the same time.

Quadriceps: Same as with the Harmstring, but your Quadriceps should rest on top of the foam roller. Gently roll from the Hips down to the knees.

Gluteus: Sit down on the roller and support the weight with your hand. Then simply roll your butt.

Back: Lie with the roller positioned under your upper back. Cross your arms and roll down to the lower back and up again.

With new clients, I always mention on forehand that I am applying oil, or put the end of the towel in the underwear. I do not want to startle clients by something i do, I want them to feel save and relaxed!

No (unwanted) talking

I often have clients who are so happy they can choose to talk. Or not. Multiple times I hear from clients about massage therapist who talk on and on.?This should not be. 'I give the massage, but you pay for it.' Is what I often say if people tell me they are relieved cause no chatter is necessary.

Also a good therapist does not gossip about his other clients.

Seriously, if he or she is talking about other clients he or she treats, what are the odds that the same is not said about you?

A good therapist knows his limits.

I always say: there is a fixer for (almost) everything. If a client has a pain problem or issue which I think I cannot solve,?I just say so. A masseuse does not everything, so I suggest they see a doctor or other therapist.
