Such conditions include severe degenerative arthritis, multiple sclerosis, strokes and respiratory diseases such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. If not Medicare eligible, check with your insurance company for any coverage they may provide. Scooter costs can range as low as $500 to upwards of $3500 for heavy duty models while electric wheelchairs are usually $1000 at minimum with some models up to $7000+.

4) Support Systems -- A big factor that needs to be considered is the external support system one has. Is there a family member involved that would be able to physically lift a scooter into a car trunk? Does one have access to a van to transport a power wheelchair? These details need to be factored in before the decision is made.

5) Do you really need it NOW? -- I think this is the most overlooked aspect of this whole process. If you have 2 severely arthritic knees that would qualify under Medicare guidelines, did you consider knee replacement surgery to potentially avoid the need? In my view, individuals tend to elect the use of assistive devices such as power wheelchairs and scooters too early in their lives. Once one chooses to go this route, persons usually fall into a dependent mode and it becomes very difficult to regain mobility and independence into the future. When I was a full-time chiropractor, I would get asked all the time by my patients if chiropractic and massage (which we used in our clinic all the time) was safe to use on a pregnant lady. The answer is a resounding "Yes."

I have treated many, many women over the years who were expecting, whether in their first or last trimester. Of course, when someone is 8-9 months along, the style of treatment may need to be catered to their body morphology. But, I never met a pregnant woman who couldn't be benefited by manual therapy.

Well, now that I am in the massage chair industry, I also get asked quite often if massage chairs are OK for pregnant women to use. Again, the answer is a resounding "Yes."

Before I go into the reasons and physiology of this therapy, I should issue this disclaimer: If you are concerned about the health of you or the baby or if you have extenuating circumstances with your health, by all means visit your primary care physician and get some peace of mind before hopping onto massage chairs.

The benefits of massage therapy during pregnancy apply to manual, hands-on massage as well as robotic massage chair therapy. The principles and benefits are the same regardless of mode of application of massage.

Pregnant women tend to endure some, if not all, of the following health issues: swelling, muscle spasm and pain, postural stress, insomnia, breathing difficulty, lack of mobility, poor circulation, back pain, neck pain and headaches. Of course, you may be suffering from many other things, but this is a pretty comprehensive list to start with.

Now, I'll discuss how massage chairs address each of these complaints:

However, the strain on your body muscles that comes from the change in shape of a growing baby inside you can cause muscle aches and pains everywhere. Massage is the perfect therapy for relaxing those muscles and ridding you of that annoying muscle pain. It can even reduce muscle spasm, let alone muscle pain. Massage chairs also contribute to the release of endorphins into your blood stream. For your information, endorphins are the body's natural pain killer.

  3. Postural Stress - anyone who has been pregnant or has seen someone who is pregnant will understand this complaint immediately. Without a 40 pound mass protruding from your midsection, most people have a poor posture to begin with. Adding a baby to the picture doesn't help at all and, in fact, makes the posture worse. Strained posture leads to strained muscles which, as mentioned in #2 above, can lead to muscle aches and pains. Most people feel like they are standing taller and straighter after a massage chair session. That is because the chair actually works on those postural issues.

  4. Lack of Mobility - range of motion is compromised by the addition of the 40 pound baby and accompanying tissue and fluids. The joints don't move as easily as they would without. Massage chairs add a lovely passive motion to your joints which will keep the discs and joints healthy. You could check how far you can turn your body before sitting in the chair and then check again after a session. You will be surprised at how much more you can turn.

  5. Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headaches - the benefits that apply to muscles pain, joint mobility, and postural strain will ultimately reduce any body pain that you have, be it low back, mid back, neck, and/or headache pain.

  6. Difficulty Breathing - it's kind of hard to take a deep breath when you are pregnant, isn't it ladies? Well, much of that disability comes from the slouching posture you develop with the addition of the 40 pound bundle of joy you are carrying in your front side. When you can have the rollers of the massage chair repeatedly roll over your mid back, you will find that your posture will be straighter and your ability to take in deep breathes will increase noticeably. This can also lead to sleeping better.

  7. Sleeping Problems (Insomnia) - I can't even begin to count the number of people, men and women alike, who told me that the biggest surprise they got with their new massage chair was how well they slept at night. Massage just tends to relax everything, like muscles and joints and posture, but also your "nerves." I can almost assure you that you will enjoy a better night's sleep after having a massage chair session. Now, I totally understand that sleeping with 8 months of pregnancy behind you is no easy task no matter what therapy you try. But, just maybe you'll enjoy a little bit better sleep after you sit in your new massage chair.

Well, that just about does it for pregnancy and massage chairs. I hope this puts your mind to rest about it. The risks are extremely small, if at all.

Geriatric Massage - Physical and Emotional Well Being For the Elderly


Geriatric massage, which utilizes the same basic techniques as traditional massage therapy, was especially designed for the elderly and their unique needs. This type of massage includes the gentle massage of soft tissues (and sometimes passive or active manipulation of the joints), proven to improve circulation and increase flexibility. More and more doctors everywhere are beginning to accept geriatric massage therapy... but as an addition to other required treatment...not as a substitute. Designing your physical therapy flooring can be a fun project when you are starting out or remodeling your place.

Most gyms have hardwood floors or concrete floors that are unsafe and uncomfortable for those who have physical limitations.

Here are a few tips to help design the best flooring for comfort when performing physical therapy for yourself or rehabilitation clients.

Tip #1

Physical therapy flooring should be thick to absorb impact from falls. Patients who are recovering may occasionally fall and need a cushioned surface that will prevent further injuries.

One option is rubber floor tiles that come in thicknesses of 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, and 3/4 inches. Choosing a thicker density to lay under your work benches and around other equipment can prevent serious injuries from falls.

In bathrooms and areas where clients may have to change clothing, rubber flooring tiles will provide cushioning if a client accidentally falls.

Tip #2

Some Tips on how to Give a Back Massage

Here are some basic tips that you can apply in order to give a soothing and adequate back massage. Have your partner lie on their stomach on a firm and comfortable surface, such as a massage bed if you have one. If not, you can find something else that will do the job easily enough. Just make sure that you have complete access to their entire back without having to reach or strain yourself.

Stand or kneel by their side, placing one your hands on their lower back and the other hand goes up between the shoulder blades, or the heart. Then warm up their back by applying pressure with your thumbs along both sides of their spine simultaneously. You should start at the lower back and work you way up to the neck the area, rather than the other way around.

Then you would use a delicate stroke to apply the massage oil. You do this by using one long stroke and then sliding your palms down either side of the spine to the pelvis, and then you scoop your hands around their hips and back up the sides to the shoulder blades. Remember to constantly maintain contact with the back and always glide your hands rather than removing them completely when you are moving to another area of the body.

You should concentrate on the areas that feel hard or tight. These areas that feel tight are known as knots. If you can loosen up these knots, the person will feel looser and more relaxed. Always perform in a clockwise circular friction with your fingertips along the muscles that are close to the spine and around the shoulder blades, as these areas tend to be the tensest in a person. Also remember to always rotate the arms gently, one at a time, in order to help loosen the shoulder joints and enhance the blood flow.

As a Physiotherapist (aka Physical Therapist) and expectant mother, I find myself increasingly interested in the physical challenges faced by new mothers and their babies. The rapid growth that occurs for both mom and baby creates unique physical demands that are typically without parallel in normal everyday life. These physical demands can lead to a variety of disorders ranging from pelvis / sacroiliac instability in mothers due to rapid weight gain and hormonal changes that result in ligament loosening (also known as laxity), to a stiff and crooked neck in infants (Torticollis) which a baby can have upon birth, or acquire in the weeks that follow.

Physiotherapists have an impressive toolbox of techniques for treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions including those mentioned above. One little-known indication for physiotherapy, which I have treated with great success, is blocked milk ducts in nursing mothers. While this issue clearly does not fall within the typical assortment of orthopedic conditions and sports injuries that have become synonymous with physiotherapy, physiotherapy modalities including therapeutic Ultrasound and massage techniques can be extremely effective in clearing clogged ducts.

Blocked milk ducts can be painful and are always distressing. Symptoms include tender, reddish and warm areas of the breast, with progressive loss of milk. Although the cause is not always clear, it is believed to commonly arise from the accumulation of dried milk within the network of Lactiferous ducts. Risk factors for developing blockage include incomplete or infrequent drainage due to short or infrequent feeds, and prolonged pressure from straps, seatbelts or tight bras. In most cases, mothers can self-treat blocked milk ducts using a few easy strategies (as also recommended by the Canadian Breastfeeding Association):


  1. Nurse your baby often day and night to completely drain the breast.

  2. Massage the breast to loosen the blockage during nursing.

  3. Wear non-restrictive clothing.

  4. Soak your breasts in warm water with Epsom salts for 10 minutes before each feeding (a handful of salt in 2-4 litres).

  5. Try different feeding positions including leaning over your baby.

  6. Eat healthy and drink lots of water.

If the condition persists for more than 2-3 days then physiotherapy may be warranted.
