How to Become a Massage Therapist

If you are searching for a career and like working with people, massage therapy may be right for you. There are many ways you can find out how to become a massage therapist. You can search through the myriad of resources online or contact a massage therapy school to get the information you need. First of all you must graduate from school with a high school diploma. You will not be accepted into any massage therapy program without this certificate. You also need to check on the qualifications needed for by your state or province to work as a registered therapist because not all schools will satisfy these requirements.

How long you have to spend in school and the price of the tuition varies from school to school. You may have to do an apprenticeship with a registered therapist and pass a national exam in order to get your license. For the most part, becoming a massage therapist means spending 2 years in school taking courses in anatomy, which are usually taught by doctors or nurses. Other courses that you may have to take include:

* Physiology

* Pathology

* Physical assessment

* Neurology, and

* Ethics

If you plan to set up your own practice, you might also want to take a business course. You will need to hire a secretary, find office space and be able to collect payments from insurance companies. You will also have to work in a clinic at the school after hours in order to get the clinical hours you need to graduate. This, of course, will be under the supervision of a registered massage therapist, or RMT for short.
