Is It Easy to Go From Physical Therapy Assistant to Physical Therapist?

Some careers allow you to upgrade to the next level without having to formally furthering your education. It just so happens that the physical therapy profession is not one of those careers. Contrary to what some might believe, you cannot go from being a PTA (physical therapy assistant) to being a physical therapist without completing a PT program and obtaining a degree.

A PTA can graduate in 2 years, while a licensed therapist will need to have at four years of schooling (or more) and needs a degree. While a degree is encouraged for a PTA, it is an essential for a physical therapist. The difference in income is substantial. A licensed therapist can make $45,000 to $100,000 a year or more depending on varying factors. A physical therapy assistant might start at a little over $30,000 a year and top out at less than $50,000 without working over time.

If money isn't what's motivating you, consider the fact that the more educated you are the more opportunities you will have. Although you initially will have to pay the price both in time and effort, over the long haul you will find that you options are much better as well as the compensation.

Is it worth it? Well that depends on your situation. If you have the time, budget and circumstance allow it; it might be the right choice for you. Weigh your options and plan career choices carefully. Doing so will not only make the end result rewarding, it will make the journey rewarding as well.
