Starting Salaries for Massage Therapy Rock!

Wow! No wonder Massage Therapy is booming. Do you know the starting salaries for massage therapy in the US according to salary.com is approximately $41,000 to $58,000?

Do you know that massage therapy can be reasonably billed out at $25 to $100 per hour, and a massage therapist's income can be substantially supplemented by cash gratuities? In other words, "tips". Cash tips are plentiful, but of course this would be difficult to estimate that amount.

A fair amount of massage therapists work either independently or part-time, sometimes both. Since the work can be physically demanding, many massage therapists may choose to work only 15 - 30 hours per week.

Lets do the math to determine how that could add up. Lets take some average numbers for the independent or freelance massage therapist.

$50 / hr x 20 / hrs per week = $1000 / week x 50 weeks / yr = $50,000.00 for part-time work per year. Now that's not a bad wage with two weeks vacation each year. And don't forget the tips! It can work out to be a very lucrative career choice to become a massage therapist.

The expected growth rate for these therapists is 18% to 26% from 2007 to 2014 says The Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

The American Massage Therapy Association did a survey and here are the results:

  • An increase of 2 million people from the prior year equals 47 million Americans receive massage

  • 65 year olds and over using massage has tripled since 1997

  • 30% increase for the use of massage in hospitals in 2006

The are some costs involved if a massage therapist owned their own business. Either the costs of setting up and maintaining a studio would be an investment or renting a massage room where all the equipment was available would be a cost to consider.

Some costs to consider may include:

  • Advertising/marketing

  • Aromatherapy supplies

  • Association dues and fees

  • Health insurance

  • Liability insurance

  • Massage chair

  • Massage oils

  • Massage table

  • Laundry

  • Space rental

Massage therapy is a field that is growing by leaps and bounds in society today. Massage therapists can offer their patients relief in a good deal of different ways. Muscle fatigue, stress, and helping sport athletes to perform at the top of their game. Others help individuals work towards solving debilitating health problems that they have. Whatever the case, there is more of a demand for massage therapists today than there has been at any point in the past.
